A key variable to the success of a business is the implementation
of a good budget. With proper planning
the budget process can be a pain free and profitable experience.
Setting financial goals for the short term and long term gives a company direction and offers guidance to employees. Similar to a family vacation, the budget process is planning where you want to go, and how you are going to get there.
Good budgeting requires a review of the trends in sales and expenses. It also gathers employee input, reviews spending priorities for fixed and variable costs, and involves the review of customer requirements. The evaluation of the business’ strengths and weaknesses should be part of the process too!
Best and worst case scenarios should also be reviewed to plan for the unexpected. Business owners planning layoffs should review the impact that increased workloads and reduced funding will have on employees. A question to ask is, “Can I expect an employee to do more with less?”
Accountability is vital to the success of a budget. Giving authority and responsibility to key personnel will assist in leading to full accountability.
It is no coincidence that most businesses that succeed have a budget, and update that budget on a regular basis. By implementing a budget that is flexible and realistic, you will be positioning your business to make changes as the needs arise.
We would welcome the opportunity to assist you and your company in the budget process.
